SalamFest is an award-winning Melbourne-born social cohesion model celebrating Islamic tradition and Muslim contributions to Melbourne, Victoria, and Australia. The Women’s Centre, an initiative of SalamFest, is a transformational community support hub to provide a space for Muslim women to connect, grow and flourish together.
Barriers to access services remain for many new and emerging communities, with women, in particular, facing increased obstacles to accessing culturally appropriate and safe services. Mainstream services do not adequately consider the religious sensitivities involved when accessing services. There can be additional sensitivities for Muslim women. Specifically that service providers and systems do not understand. A space is needed where Muslim women can benefit from culturally appropriate and accessible services, build community and gain a sense of belonging. The Centre will provide this space for Muslim women who feel excluded from mainstream services and areas.
